A team of four undergraduate Haskayne School of Business finance majors placed first in the 2nd Annual Western Canada Investment Research Challenge. The Challenge featured teams of undergraduate and/or graduate students from five universities (University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria). Each team presented their analysis of Tim Hortons Inc. (THI on the TSX) and the Haskayne team was chosen first based on their presentation and on an earlier submitted research report.
The winning team members are Brian Etienne, Sean Makins, Mehdi Mehrabani, and Curtis Whyte. The team was aided in their preparation by members of the Calgary CFA Society as their Industry Advisor was Grant Hofer, CFA, and their Faculty Advisor was Dr. Michael Robinson, CFA.
As a result of the win, the Haskayne team has been invited to compete in the Americas Regional challenge March 17-18 2010 in New York. Success at that event will earn the team an invitation to the Global Investment Research Challenge in Hong Kong April 16-17 2010.
"Winning the challenge was a recognition of the hard work on the part of our team and our mentors,” said Brian Etienne. “The four of us on the team have learned a phenomenal amount since starting the project in the fall, and are very excited about the opportunity to represent Haskayne in New York against some of the top business schools in the world."
"The WCIRC was a considerable undertaking for a group of undergraduates and the Haskayne team demonstrated exceptional commitment, knowledge, and critical thinking,” added Grant Hofer. “I believe that the analytical skills that they have developed through this process will be a major contributor to their success in the CFA program and in their careers in the financial community".
The event was hosted by the Edmonton CFA Society and sponsored by Alberta Investment Management Corp. and the Edmonton Economic Development Corp. The Challenge is a component of the Global Investment Research Challenge hosted by the CFA Institute.
